Mad Meg

This year, the DIG Watchdog is signed by an internationally renowned French artist: Mad Meg. Visionary, prodigious, radical, Mad Meg will be present at the DIG Festival with an exclusive exhibition in collaboration with Galleria D406. Born in 1976, she lives and works in Paris.  

After spending a short period at the Paris School of Fine Arts and earning a diploma in artistic bookbinding, Mad Meg embarked on an artistic path marked by a work ethic bordering on the workaholic, distinguished by an openly stated influence from the universe of Hieronymus Bosch.

After filling numerous small notebooks with autobiographical drawings and spending weeks in museums observing and drawing, she began, in 2001, to shape her world: realistic, grounded in autobiography, radical feminist commentary, and an encyclopedic exploration of issues related to new technologies.

She draws on paper sheets, often very large-format, using Sergent Major pens and India ink. Initially, she worked on the appropriation of foundational paintings of Western classical culture, then moved toward an inventory of masculinities in the series The Patriarchs.

Watchdog

“For DIG’s Watchdog, I wanted to evoke the multiplicity of the media used by journalism, from paper to digital, from pen to smartphone, from camera to video camera… The idea of a cyborg dog in my style could easily have turned out unsettling, so I chose the Komondor, a large shepherd dog with a friendly look, whose dreadlocks allowed me to play with the many cables. I also kept the circle that other artists had used to depict their watchdogs, thinking of making it run to emphasize the dynamism of journalism. I conceived it as a sun, creating a bond between us and the world.”
