Artificial Pitch, Damned Turf?
by Emmanuel Morimont [RTBF (Belgium 2019), 27′]

Each year, 1,400 new synthetic turf come out of the ground in Europe. In the middle of the pitch, black granules. They infiltrate everywhere: in shoes, clothes or hair.

These are crushed tires. These granules contain toxic substances or even known carcinogens. What are their impact on health and on the environment? The journalist took the time to investigate for a year on the synthetic turf market and the pressures of the industry.

The broadcasting of the report resulted in a chain reaction of political decisions in Belgium: parliamentary questions, more stringent standards or field replacements. An investigation that could put the precautionary principle at the centre of the debate.
