Europe is flooded and on fire. Investigating the climate crisis
With Marta Vidal, Ludovica Jona, Lucy Taylor, Daniel Wizenberg, Chiara Spallino
22 September 15:00 - 16:00

IN COLLABORAZIONE CON JOURNALISMFUND.EU AND INFO.NODES
July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded in Europe. That is why now, more than ever, supporting cross-border investigative journalism is important to inform the public about the many challenges we face and the possible ways to address them. In this panel, 4 journalists will talk about their investigations supported by Journalismfund Europe. Marta Vidal investigated how intensive berry farming is depleting scarce water resources, aggravating drought and soil degradation and driving biodiversity loss in one of the continent’s most climate vulnerable regions. Ludovica Jana investigated the issue of deforestation aimed at the production of woody biomass, qualified as renewable energy sources by the European Commission and therefore subsidized by the Member States. Lucy Taylor investigated the dirty trail of British waste from dustbins in England and exposed a British system creaking under the weight of hundreds of millions of tonnes of waste – with illegal dumping happening with impunity both at home and abroad. Chiara Spallino investigated how the Italian government intervention dedicated to the Po river is submerged in opacity and conflict. The journalists will tell the audience how those investigations were made and what impact they had.
