Under the rubble of the Internet. How capitalism and Silicon Valley took the net away from us

With Cory Doctorow, Philip Di Salvo

22 September 2023    19:00 - 19:45

Fondazione Collegio San Carlo – Teatro

Via San Carlo 5
Modena, 41121 Italia

We don’t inhabit Facebook, Instagram and the like, we feel like their prisoners. The Internet, the greatest technological utopia ever imagined has turned into something very different and problematic, where power is anything but equally distributed. The model of the large commercial platforms, where we spend most of our time online, is in deep crisis, amid scandals, controversial takeovers, malfunctions and increasingly unethical uses of data produced by humans. In the background, meanwhile, is the growing use of artificial intelligence, mostly developed by large technology companies, which are building it on the basis of their culture and profit goals. How can we imagine alternatives? Cory Doctorow, who will join the panel through video, is one of the most respected science fiction authors and critics of the Internet, and together with him we will try to figure out how to seize the means of computation.
