What data reveal. Using public datasets to build investigations and uncover stories
DESCRIPTION
A practical workshop for those who want to learn how to find, read, and use public data to produce investigative reports and journalistic storytelling. Together we will explore the main official sources, such as statistical institutes, public authorities, and international databases, as well as alternative sources that are often overlooked but highly valuable for investigative work. Participants will learn how to assess the reliability of information, distinguish between raw and processed data, and identify signals that may point to potential manipulation or distortion. The workshop will also cover the key questions to ask when faced with a dataset: who produced it, for what purpose, in which context, and what it can (or cannot) reveal. Through hands-on exercises and real case studies, participants will acquire useful tools to integrate data into journalistic storytelling and transform them into clear, verified, and impactful stories. No prior experience or statistical knowledge is required.
