The art of the uncomfortable interview: techniques and secrets from the investigative desk of Swedish Television

This workshop, led by investigative journalists from the investigative desk of Sweden’s public service broadcaster, addresses one of the fundamental challenges of journalism: how to hold people in positions of power accountable, especially when they try to avoid questions. Uppdrag granskning, the award-winning investigative unit of Sweden’s public television SVT, is renowned for its powerful and impactful video investigations. Through a combination of storytelling and discussion, the workshop will explore effective strategies for handling these high-risk encounters. Drawing on concrete examples from their work, the journalists will analyze specific cases where their approach succeeded, as well as instances where they may have pushed too far—or not far enough. This critical examination of their methods will also open a broader discussion on journalistic ethics. The workshop will delve into how different journalistic traditions and cultures influence approaches to conflict, including the Swedish tradition, which can be more direct than others. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences and insights, fostering a collaborative and stimulating debate on this crucial aspect of the profession.
