Frames of Collapse: Investigative Reporting and Documentary Film on a Dying Planet
DESCRIPTION
August 2026 was the hottest August ever recorded, and it tied July 2023 as the warmest month in the whole of the modern record. It was also the month of the flood disaster in Nepal, when a glacier collapse on the Nepal–Tibet border sent ice, rock and water nearly one hundred kilometres down the valley and killed hundreds of people. Scientists have linked the growing frequency of such events to warming temperatures, melting ice and thawing permafrost. The climate crisis has become part of what the present looks like, yet much of it unfolds in places few will ever see, on timescales the eye cannot follow. It is the defining phenomenon of our time and of our future, and it may be the hardest story journalism has ever had to tell: slow where the news is fast, immense where attention is short, and driven by human hands whose role in it, plain for anyone to see, keeps slipping out of the frame. The panel brings together journalists and filmmakers who have used the documentary to make that crisis visible, from the Bering Strait to the drought-stricken American Southwest. Alongside them sits a catastrophe of a different order. Fukushima was not a climate disaster but a nuclear one, a collapse of human technology and oversight rather than of ice and permafrost; it belongs in this conversation because it too tests how a catastrophe on that scale can be held within a single image. Their means differ, and so do their subjects, but the difficulty they share is one of images. How do you frame a process too large, too slow or too remote to be seen directly? How do you put something as terrible as the unthinkable on screen without numbing the audience or looking away? And how do you tell what may be the most important story of our time without letting it fade into the noise?
