Investigating the inaccessible: new frontiers of conflict reporting

DESCRIPTION

When journalists cannot set foot on the ground, how can the truth still be reported? In recent years, conflicts and crises from Ukraine to Gaza to Syria have forced newsrooms to adapt to hostile, closed, or entirely inaccessible environments. This panel explores the innovative reporting techniques that are reshaping war and crisis coverage: open-source intelligence (OSINT), satellite imagery, geolocation, social media verification, and digital forensics. International journalists who have used these tools will present their projects, walk the audience through their investigative processes, and share how they turned scattered digital traces into verified, compelling narratives. The discussion will also address the ethical challenges and limitations of remote reporting, and what these methods mean for the future of journalism in places where access is restricted—or too dangerous to pursue.
