In this documentary, Louis Theroux spends time with the community of Israeli religious-nationalist settlers. Their settlements are illegal under international law, yet they are protected by the Israeli army, police, and government. After the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, in which 1,200 Israelis were killed, there has been an acceleration in the creation of settlements, with settlers engaging in a campaign of violence against local Palestinian communities. What was once a marginal movement has now gained support at the highest levels of government, with its backers holding key cabinet positions and influencing not only the role of the army but also the future of this conflict. Louis Theroux ventures into the West Bank, meeting prominent settlers—including the movement’s “godmother,” Daniella Weiss—and traveling across the territory to understand the consequences of their activities. Louis also meets Palestinians whose lives have been upended by the arrival of settlers in their communities. While global attention is focused on Gaza—where it is estimated that at least 50,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since October 7—Theroux discovers that settlers are already making plans to establish themselves in that territory as well.
