DESCRIPTION

Screening of “I AM A HUMAN” by Salvatore Vitale
(32′ - Switzerland, South Africa - V.O.)
Introduction by the director and Philip Di Salvo
Followed by a Q&A with the director

“I am a human” is the new visual essay by visual artist Salvatore Vitale, part of his long-term project “Death by GPS”, focusing on how automation technologies affect our lives, our work and our society. The film “I am a human”, in particular, explores the connections between protests, illegal mining practices, gig economy workers and the various levels of labour exploitation associated with this sector. The film highlights how capitalist society and large corporations often exploit vulnerable workers, highlighting the need for alternative socio-economic approaches to ensure fair working conditions. For this project, Vitale hired South African IT freelancers through the online platform Upwork. These people were paid a standard Western salary to create videos, images and music showing their daily lives and working environments. Using questionnaires, Vitale also delved into their experiences as gig economy workers in Africa, exploring issues such as work-life balance.
