This investigation uncovered cases of illegal insemination in several Swedish hospitals, creating an unprecedented health scandal in the Scandinavian country involving well-known and respected doctors. Cross-referencing data gathered from DNA tests and the collection of numerous testimonies, the investigation team uncovered five cases of illegal insemination in a hospital in Halmstad that occurred between 1985 and 1996. At least five men gave birth to children without consent, after their sperm had been collected for normal infertility treatment. Other cities are involved in what has become known nationally as «the sperm scandal in Sweden»: some men, who during their military service in Uppsala had been recruited by the Academic Hospital as donors for research purposes, discovered that their sperm had been used without their consent. Since the publication of this investigation, the investigation is expanding and new cases are emerging.
