Magical, autonomous, all-powerful: artificial intelligence fuels both dreams and nightmares. On one hand, tech giants promise the dawn of a new humanity. On the other, the true face of AI remains hidden. As data centers consume land and drain rivers, millions of invisible workers around the globe are exploited to feed data into Big Tech’s algorithms, often at the cost of their mental and emotional health. These hidden laborers are among the collateral damages of “Longtermism,” an ideology popular in Silicon Valley that focuses on building ambitious imaginary futures while ignoring the consequences of the present—consequences already embedded deep within AI’s very core.
