The once-thriving borderlands between Paraguay and Brazil have been turned into a green desert: the heart of the “Soy Republic,” cradle of the global agribusiness industry. Across an endless horizon of monocultures, past and present converge under the sign of violence. «Green is the New Red» investigates the killing of more than 1,500 environmental activists in Latin America since 2012, murders carried out through brutal methods rooted in the 1970s, when thousands of so-called “subversives” were eliminated to clear the way for land occupation. The documentary is an intimate journey through history and the present, tracing the roots of today’s ecological catastrophe.
