In Port-au-Prince, three million people are trapped in a relentless gang war with no end in sight. The gangs control the ports, strategic entry points for food imports on which the island’s survival depends. Exhausted by fear and suffering, Haiti’s citizens point to the corrupt elites, accused of exploiting the trade in basic necessities to amass vast fortunes. And despite the arrival of a UN-backed multinational force, the crisis remains far from any effective or lasting solution. «Haiti: The Iron Grip of the Gangs» reveals how the overwhelming economic and military power of criminal organizations has stripped the Caribbean nation’s people of the most vital thing of all: the hope of returning to normal life.
