“The story of a promise: preserving a newborn’s umbilical cord stem cells to one day cure rare diseases. This advertising slogan convinced hundreds of thousands of parents across Europe to turn to Cryosave, the Swiss market leader. In September 2019, the company went bankrupt, leaving the genetic material to vanish into thin air, before being taken over by would-be buyers in Poland. For parents, the search began: where had the stem cells gone? The film investigates an opaque world in which the human body is treated as a commodity.
