Abolish prison
DESCRIPTION
Riots, suicides and overcrowding: for years, Italian prisons have been living in an emergency situation. On the one hand, a policy that aims to solve social problems with repression. On the other, a detention situation that, contrary to constitutional dictates, does not always respect the rights and dignity of prisoners. The result is outdated prison facilities, poor hygiene, and gaps in medical care that burden the physical and mental health of prisoners. This panel dwells on the situation in Italian prisons, on the complicated process of rehabilitation and social reintegration of prisoners and on a social system that still, as Gustavo Zagrebelsky wrote, "has not been able to imagine anything other than cages, bars, cells behind which to lock up their fellow human beings like ferocious animals".
