Resisting the Power of Algorithms

The artificial intelligence tools and algorithms at our disposal today do not have post-human superpowers, but they do exercise less obvious and more subtle forms of power. It is a fact that algorithms replicate and accelerate pre-existing social issues and political conflicts. The chronicles are full of cases of discrimination, surveillance abuse, censorship and sexist or racist outcomes generated by AI systems used in sensitive contexts. How can we respond to these new forms of digital power, so invisible but also so impactful? The panel will discuss how journalism, academia and the visual arts are trying to put a face and a name to the power of algorithms. Where there is power there is also resistance, wrote Michel Foucault.
