Silencing Gaza: the war against journalists and freedom of information
DESCRIPTION
The war in Gaza is being waged not only on the ground but also in the information sphere. In a context marked by one of the highest journalist death tolls in recent history, Israel faces mounting accusations of deliberately targeting media workers, making it increasingly difficult to document events inside the Strip. At the same time, civilians endure communication blackouts, structural restrictions on Internet access, and growing censorship that obstruct the free circulation of news and testimonies. This panel will explore this crucial dimension of the conflict, examining propaganda, disinformation dynamics, and the responsibility of major U.S. technology platforms. From shadowbanning practices to direct support for the IDF through digital infrastructures and algorithms, tech companies shape not only global perceptions of the conflict but also the very possibility of reporting from within Gaza.
