An Ordinary Massacre

Production: ARTE
Country: France
Year: 2022
Duration: 12'
Directed by: Charles Emptaz, Olivier Jobard

It is an almost ordinary massacre that is recounted by this ARTE documentary. A war crime like so many others in Tigray since the conflict erupted in 2020. However, the killing of Mahbere Dego, near the holy city of Axum, is unique because it was filmed and commented on by one of the soldiers of the killing battalion that executed the 73 villagers. A few months after the events, the soldier, who goes by the name ‘Fafi’, was captured and recognised as the author of this video documenting the war crimes of his comrades in arms in the Ethiopian army. How does one recognise an ethnic massacre? This documentary returns to Mahere Dego, the site of the tragedy, where it met the brother of two victims.
