Since the beginning of the war on drugs, the number of women in U.S. prisons has increased by 800 percent. Most of them are mothers.
The documentary is about how in a Midwestern state, three extraordinary mothers-Tomika, Lydia and Amanda-rebuild their lives after years of separation from their children.
Their stories overlap with those of a new reintegration program led by Malika, an advocate previously incarcerated in the same facility. Filmed over a span of three and a half years, Apart retraces their steps and joins together stories of family, separation, loss and survival.
