Death on the Border

Production: BBC Africa Eye
Country: UK
Year: 2022
Duration: 28'
Directed by: Suzanne Vanhooymissen, Sara Creta

This film documents with exceptional and forensic detail the death of at least 37 African migrants (recently updated figure) on 24 June 2022 at the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla. In the days after 24 June, social media was flooded with gruesome footage, showing a sea of African migrants’ bodies on the ground, being beaten by Moroccan security forces while pleading for help. Other videos showed migrants’ lifeless bodies scattered across the border infrastructure, with motionless bodies being kicked and dragged around by security forces.

This investigation would later reveal how hundreds of migrants were held on the ground in a small area with dead bodies among them for several hours with no apparent medical assistance, in the blistering heat. The Africa Eye team painstakingly collected all online video evidence and sourced many unpublished videos from that day.
