On 6th March 2022, large anti-war demonstrations across Russia saw the arrest of over 5,000 protesters. 29 were taken to the Brateyevo police station in Moscow for questioning. There, an unnamed agent dressed in black subjected at least 11 young women to verbal and physical abuse, often amounting to torture. Two of the detainees recorded their ordeals and once released leaked the audio to the press.

Despite international outrage and multiple calls for an investigation by a Russian politician, the authorities did not initiate criminal proceedings. Instead of starting one, the victims tried to find the ‘man in black’ themselves. Using a leaked database from a Russian grocery shop delivery company called Yandex, archived social media accounts and old dating profiles, BBC Eye Investigations tells the story of how these young women came together to reveal the identity of their torturer and his commanding officer.
