This documentary by BBC Africa Eye investigates how and why Mozambique has become southern Africa’s latest terrorism hotspot. Kidnappings, beheadings and arson are now the calling card of a brutal rebel group in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country. From 2017 to the present, the group has carried out hundreds of attacks, causing untold numbers of deaths and forcing more than 700,000 people to flee.
As Italy turns to African countries to lessen its dependence on Russian gas supplies, energy giant Eni has struck an $8 billion deal to build a gas plant in northern Mozambique. But the trail of kidnappings and beheadings has already caused the suspension of another multimillion-dollar gas project.
