In southern Africa, smuggling gangs help criminals launder hundreds of millions of dollars. It is the so-called gold mafia, the gold mafia, which uses the precious metal as a tool to clean up dirty money. An apparently legitimate method that is difficult to unmask, especially for those with large amounts of hidden wealth, as this four-part investigation by Al Jazeera's Investigative Unit has shown. Through a complex network of companies, forged identities and false documents, the smugglers help the criminals, enriching themselves in turn.
