After the 2021 coup and the civil war that followed, Myanmar has increasingly come to resemble a nation trapped in a permanent state of emergency. The situation worsened dramatically after the devastating March 28, 2025 earthquake, which left more than 5,000 dead and nearly 8,000 missing. Myanmar: A Country in Ruins offers a rare inside look at conditions in the Southeast Asian nation, long inaccessible to international journalists, with verified, first-hand reporting difficult to get beyond its borders. The film paints an intimate, unflinching portrait of a country in collapse, where the willpower of its citizens is tested daily by the impossibility of returning to anything resembling a “normal” life.
