Almost five years after returning to power, the Taliban have transformed Afghanistan into an isolated fundamentalist regime, largely closed to the outside world and foreign media. After four filming trips conducted mostly outside official channels, this reportage offers rare access to a country where women are being erased from public life, dissent is brutally suppressed and freedom is increasingly restricted. At the same time, the Taliban have brought relative security after decades of war and drastically reduced opium production. Through the stories of Afghan men and women living through these changes, the film explores the contradictions of a radical regime with no parallel in the contemporary world.
