He was our guide, our brother, DIG’s soul.

It is with infinite sadness that today we announce the passing of Matteo Scanni, the President and co-founder of DIG, age 51.

Our thoughts go to the family — to Sofia, Sara, Susanna, his parents and siblings.

Matteo, a brilliant investigative journalist and generous teacher, was able to shape generations of reporters in Italy and abroad.

After 25 years in the media industry as a reporter, producer and consultant, in 2015 he co-founded the DIG Awards to support quality journalism and the work of freelancers.

The impact of his work will last for decades, through the actions, words and ideas of all the people lucky enough to meet him and call him a friend.

During a speech at DIG Festival 2021, he said some words that we won’t forget:

“We promise to be back, fiercer than ever. Informal as usual, anarchists like never before. More punk, more ready to fight. Kind as we have always been, but even more radical.”

Matteo, we are with you. As you always said to us, “Stay gold”. Today, tomorrow and forever.
