Manon Loizeau

Manon Loizeau, born in London in 1969, is a French-British journalist and documentary filmmaker. After beginning her career in print journalism, she moved to Moscow at the age of 24, where she gradually turned to documentary filmmaking. Her films explore conflict zones and territories often inaccessible to journalists, notably Chechnya, where she made Grozny, Chronicle of a Disappearance, an award-winning film released in 2004 that exposed the violence of a war that had long been ignored. Her work has since taken her to Iran, Syria and Yemen, where she has given a voice to oppressed populations despite censorship. In Iran, she documented the impact of the Arab revolutions under Ahmadinejad’s regime, while in Syria, she secretly collected deeply moving testimonies from victims of torture under Assad’s regime. These films offer powerful portraits of resistance and hope among people who, despite oppression, continue to aspire to freedom. In Silent War (2017), she sheds light on the sexual violence suffered by Syrian women during the war. The film earned her, for the second time, the World Organisation Against Torture Award. Manon Loizeau pays tribute to the victims and witnesses who take risks to ensure that their stories are heard, highlighting the importance of memory and justice in forgotten conflicts. Her work reminds us that resistance can emerge in the most extreme circumstances, and that these testimonies are essential to raising awareness.
