Roberto Scarpinato, A former magistrate, he is now a Senator of the Republic. In 1989 he joined the anti-mafia pool of the Palermo Public Prosecutor's Office and collaborated with Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. He dealt - among other trials - with the political-mafia murders of Piersanti Mattarella, Pio La Torre, Michele Reina and Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa. After the Via d'Amelio massacre, on 19 July 1992, he promoted the revolt of eight prosecutors against Chief Prosecutor Pietro Giammanco, accused of having isolated Falcone. That clamorous stance forced the CSM to intervene: Giammanco was forced to ask for a transfer and a turning point came in Palermo, with Giancarlo Caselli as new prosecutor, the arrest of Salvatore Riina and the opening of investigations for some of the most important trials on mafia-power relations, which brought many untouchables to the bench, including Senator Giulio Andreotti and Bruno Contrada, number three of the Sisde (proceedings managed by Scarpinato with other members of the anti-mafia pool). Scarpinato later took charge of the investigation into the so-called “criminal systems”, which investigated the political motives and background of the 1992 and 1993 massacres. He became Deputy Prosecutor and conducted pressing investigations on the relations between the Mafia and deviated Freemasonry, on the negotiation between the State and Cosa Nostra during the period of the massacres, and on the relations between the Mafia and the economy. In 2005 he went to the Mafia-Economy Department, which under his direction dismantled colossal illegal assets, seizing assets worth approximately three and a half billion euro from 2008 to 2010. Appointed Prosecutor General at the Caltanissetta Court of Appeal in 2010. he managed the complex revision of the sentences passed in the “Borsellino uno” and “Borsellino bis” trials for the Via D'Amelio massacre, obtaining the reinstatement of certain defendants unjustly sentenced to life imprisonment following the statements of Vincenzo Scarantino, who turned out to be a false collaborator with the judicial authorities. Appointed Prosecutor General at the Court of Appeal of Palermo at the beginning of 2013, he is handling trials of national importance, including the proceedings for the double murder of police officer Antonino Agostino and his wife Ida Castelluccio, murdered in 1989, a case that remained unsolved for more than twenty-five years, in which a complex plot of covert relations between the Mafia and some men of the secret services and police forces was brought to light for the first time. He took part in the National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office coordination meetings for the investigation into the external instigators of the ’92-’93 massacres, together with the Prosecutors of Palermo, Caltanissetta, Reggio Calabria and Florence. In October 2022, after retiring due to age limit, he was elected to the Senate as an M5S candidate. He is currently a member of COPASIR, the Anti-Mafia Commission and the Justice Commission. He is the author, among others, of “Il ritorno del principe” (with Saverio Lodato, Chiarelettere).
