In order to achieve these goals, we've decided to form a partnership with Association A Sud, an independent, radical, horizontal, feminist ecologist organisation that has been working on issues of environmental and social justice for over 20 years, promoting actions and interventions on the ground, dissemination initiatives, research, training and education with the aim of creating widespread awareness for urgent climate action.

Since 2018 A Sud helps cultural institutions transforming their approach to the ecological transition and in 2022 started a specific program called: Sustainable Cultureof which DIG - Ets Association became a member.

DIG Festival: le nostre azioni per l’ambiente

In the section 'How to get there' you will find information on public mobility services with which you can reach Modena and the event locations while reducing the environmental impact. In addition, we offer a discount of 15% to those who, by purchasing the "DIG Cinema Pass" (a ticket allowing access to over 30 screenings within the Cinema Astra), will be able to prove that they have reached Modena by public transport or by using a car sharing service. All DIG Festival locations can be easily reached on foot, within a radius of about one kilometre as the crow flies within the city centre. For guests travelling by land we favour the train option and, thanks to the collaboration with our partner Autorama, we will use hybrid or fully electric cars. In addition, DIG Festival has launched a partnership with Ciclofficina Popolare – Rimessa in Movimento in Modena, a non-profit association whose main goal is to support cycling mobility by sharing mechanical know-how. The ciclofficina will provide two cargo bikes to be used by the Festival staff for transporting materials within the historic city center—avoiding the use of cars and taxis.

All our printers already use environmentally friendly FSC-certified paper from recycled and recovered material. We incentivise the use of programmes in digital format, gradually decreasing the number of prints from year to year. We also privilege the use of recycled and recyclable materials for the realisation of fittings. As far as merchandising is concerned, thanks to our partner At Labora of Modena, we will make Made in Italy canvas bags sewn using fabric scraps obtained from the cutting of fabric bags used by the big local fashion brands, with which the company collaborates. As for clothing: DIG Festival is committed to making Oeko Tex-certified clothing, in particular T-shirts in 100% in-converted organic cotton; any sweatshirts, on the other hand, will be made from 80% recycled cotton and 20% recycled polyester. We will also minimise the impact generated by ticketing, using digital platforms such as DICE and, where unavoidable, printing receipts on recyclable paper.

Every year DIG Festival deals with the issues of climate change and environmental protection in numerous DIG Talks open to all and sundry, as well as in DIG Academy training sessions and cinema screenings. Among the main topics discussed - together with Italian and international journalists, activists, academics, photojournalists and videomakers - are deforestation, pollution, drought and extreme weather phenomena, nature conservation, climate migration and the impacts of big oil and food companies. DIG plays an important role in amplifying and giving space to a debate on the actions that the community must urgently put at the centre of its agenda, focusing on the priority of protecting our planet's ecosystems and those who inhabit them.

DIG prefers food and beverages from the local supply chain, to enhance local products and support small and medium-sized local companies. Although DIG Festival does not directly serve food and drinks to event participants, over the years we have established partnerships with restaurants and historic venues in Modena located close to the Festival venues such as Osteria Stallo del Pomodoro (Largo Hannover 63), Alvinelli (inside the Albinelli Marketin Via Luigi Albinelli), Time Zones (piazzale Torti), Maison Livre (via Emilia Centro 103) e Salumeria con Cucina (via Malatesta 20). A queste realtà si aggiunge il bar Caesar's for breakfast. Osteria Stallo del Pomodoro and Alvinelli offer typical Modenese cuisine (with gluten-free options), while FusiOrari works on more contemporary and vegetarian dishes. In this way, the offer is varied and inclusive.

DIG has opened a dialogue with the locations where the Festival takes place to ensure that waste collection points are set up correctly and well marked on the event map. Communication on how to properly sort the most common waste will also be posted at the identified collection points. Within the organisational team, a person has been identified as being responsible for waste management, who will train volunteers at the individual locations to disseminate information on waste separation and supervise the effective application of the rules during the 5-day Festival.

Thanks to the partnership with the programme "Sustainable Culture' by A Sud, an association that has been active for twenty years for environmental and climate justice, DIG Festival will sign a document with the commitments made regarding environmental sustainability for the realisation of the event. Starting in 2024, DIG Festival commits to define and set up the main awareness-raising activities, both internally (production team, management and volunteers) and externally (guests and users of the cultural offerings during the days of the Festival) and to set up training courses for its staff and production team. In addition, starting this year, we will carry out a survey of the data that must be collected for the calculation of carbon emissions, going to build a mapping that identifies the types of data, the responsible persons to whom they must be requested, and the possibility or otherwise of obtaining them. In 2025, starting with this initial reconnaissance work, we will proceed with the actual data collection, which will be processed by an online calculator, resulting in the first CO2 emission data of DIG Festival. In 2026, in addition to collecting carbon emission data again, we will identify appropriate upstream emission reduction actions, and where this is not possible, also possible offsetting actions.
